How often should you flush?

Car engine cooling system failures rank among the top three causes of roadside breakdowns in Australia, with radiator failures accounting for a large percentage of these.

But breakdown due to overheating is at the extreme range of signs you need a cooling system check. Your car's temperature gauge may indicate a high coolant temperature in slow traffic but returns to normal during high speed driving. In some cases, you may notice a sweetish, “hot water” smell coming from the engine, or even notice actual steam coming from under the bonnet.

You can avoid being "that car" broken down on the freeway with steam pouring from under the hood while the occupants swelter in the heat. A fully functional radiator and cooling system is essential in preventing overheating, which can cause expensive breakdowns and may result in serious engine damage. Modern engines also operate more efficiently within specific temperature ranges..

Pacific Garage mechanics can give your radiator and cooling system a full inspection and where needed, a well deserved service. Our qualified mechanics will properly flush your radiator to remove build up of rust and other debris. Once the cooling system is flushed and fresh coolant is added your car's cooling system will be running like a dream and you will have gained the following benefits;

  • Your radiator will run more efficiently and have an increased life expectancy.
  • Your engine will be more efficient and have an increased life expectancy.
  • Get a boost in vehicle performance and power.
  • The water pump will last longer due to better protection and lubrication.

Your manufacturer's log book provides an outline for how often to flush your radiator system, It is commonly suggested that you flush your coolant system every two years or 40,000 km's depending on which comes first. However, the size of your engine, regional weather, the condition of your current coolant, and the total km's driven can all have an effect on how often you should replace the coolant in your radiator.

At Ballina, at your request we will perform a full 65 Point Vehicle Inspection Report for free as part of any minor, major or log book service on your vehicle. This includes inspecting the level and condition of coolant in your system and the written report will tell you if we feel a radiator flush, coolant replacement or any repairs are necessary to maintain the safety and performance of your vehicle.
